There are multiple incentives, or payment methods, to choose from when working with influencers and creators. An incentive is any type of payment or gift provided to influencers for their participation in a campaign. For more details on incentive options, see Incentive Overview.
Choosing the right incentive format for influencers and creators depends on your campaign goals, budget, and the type of influencers you’re targeting. In general, the most common incentive types are gifts, cash, or a combination of both.
What is gifting?
A gift incentive involves providing free products or services to influencers in exchange for content creation or promotion. With gifting, the creation of content can be guaranteed with a binding contract (Later Influence Standard Influencer Agreement), but it’s also very common not to be guaranteed.
Gift incentives are often ideal for smaller budgets, building organic relationships, and engaging niche audiences through nano- and micro-influencers.
What are cash incentives?
Cash incentives involve paying influencers a set fee for their collaboration, typically tied to deliverables like posts, stories, or videos. With cash incentives, content is guaranteed as the brand and creator(s) agree upon and fulfil a contract (Later Influence Standard Influencer Agreement).
Cash incentives are best for brands with larger budgets seeking guaranteed deliverables and the ability to scale campaigns with macro- or mega-influencers.

Blended Strategy for Optimal ROI
Many brands combine both methods by reaching out to a variety of influencers offering gifting or cash, or combining both:
- Gifting for discovery and cultivating authentic partnerships with smaller influencers
- Cash for scaling campaigns or working with larger influencers to target broader audiences
- Gifting + Cash for creators to feature products and/or services in paid social campaigns with a guarantee to reach a wide variety of audiences
